What a Flever book nook kit is

A book nook is a miniature scene built tall and narrow so that it stands on a bookshelf with real books on either side. Ours open onto an alley, a stair, a library window or a lantern-lit gate, and the perspective is deliberately forced — the far end is smaller than the near end — so the shelf seems to have a hole in it.

Because a book nook has a roof and two close walls, the lighting does most of the work. Every one of ours carries an LED strip, and two models use a sensor so the scene wakes up when you walk past. Build the shell, wire the light, then spend the rest of the evening on the bricks, the ivy and the signage.

The design problem with a nook is depth. We draw three or four layers, shrink each one a little, and let the shadow between them do the rest. Loose parts arrive in small boxes keyed to those layers, so the street lamps, the shop stand, the barrels and the flowers go on in the order that keeps your fingers out of the finished part of the scene.

A finished nook is the same height as a hardback and about as deep as a bookshelf, which is the whole point: it hides in a row of books until somebody notices the light. They make good gifts for people who already own more books than shelf, and good company on an office bookcase.

These sit between the room kits and the full dollhouse kits in difficulty. The build is not long, but the detailing rewards whatever time you are willing to give it, and the craft shows most in the last hour.

What comes in the box

  • Laser-cut MDF layers that build the forced perspective of the alley or stair.
  • An LED light wire — on two models, a sensor that lights the scene as you pass.
  • Bricks, ivy, signage, paper flowers and the small printed decorations.
  • Glue, tweezers and sanding sticks.
  • A booklet that photographs every layer before it goes in.

Choosing between them

  1. Measure the height of your bookshelf gap — a nook has to clear the shelf above it, lamp and all.
  2. Choose by the light: the alley scenes glow warm and low, the library and castle models throw harder shadows.
  3. If it is going on an office shelf rather than at home, pick one of the quieter designs without a sign.

Questions about our book nook kits

Will a Flever book nook fit a normal bookshelf?

Our nooks are drawn to the height of a standard hardback and to the depth of an ordinary shelf, so in most bookcases they slide straight in. Check the finished height on the listing against your shelf gap if your bookcase has fixed shelves.

Do the book nook kits light up?

All of them do. Each kit includes an LED wire and a battery pack, and two of the models carry a sensor that wakes the scene when somebody walks past the shelf.

How long does a book nook take to build?

Eight to fifteen hours for most builders — two or three evenings. The shell goes together quickly; the bricks, the ivy and the signage are what take the time, and they are also what make it worth doing.

What builders say about our book nooks

“With a little patience and time, this was fun to make. It looks great and was fun to make. I think it would be great for someone who has made miniature kits before. It is tiny, so unless you like making tiny miniatures I wouldn't recommend this to first-time crafters. The lights all worked and were easy to install.”

“This is the cutest and most lovingly prepared little kit. It even comes with a flyer explaining where you can go for additional instruction. It's so kindly written. Nothing is pre-assembled and materials are separated into bags making this an incredible learning opportunity. I now know how to make a miniature shelf!”

“This one is a lot of fun for a few reasons. First off, there is very little foliage, which is something I'm not a fan of. There are also very few cutouts, which is awesome because I don't much like scissors work. I am, however, starting to enjoy fabric work, but there is none of that in this kit.”
